As of February 2020, 476,100 Black people in the United States were living with HIV/AIDS, which is 43% of the estimated total number of people living with HIV in the country. In 2022, Black men accounted for 35% of new HIV diagnoses among men in the U.S., which is 8,831 people. Black men are also 8.1 times more likely to be diagnosed with HIV than white men.
Black men who have sex with men (MSM) and injection drug users are the focus of national efforts to reduce the HIV epidemic in the U.S.. However, Black men who are at risk of HIV through heterosexual contact have been largely neglected by research, programs, and policies.
